Meet Dr. Hersch

Education

Steven L. Hersch, M.D., F.A.C.P., grew up in the Los Angeles area and took classes at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) while in high school.  He did his undergraduate work at the University of Southern California (USC).  Never one to be constrained by convention, he applied and was accepted to medical school before completing his undergraduate degree.  Dr. Hersch graduated from the USC School of Medicine in 1986, and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, MA.  He was elected as a Fellow to the American College of Physicians in 2001 in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the field of Internal Medicine.

Private Practice

Dr. Hersch returned to the Los Angeles area in 1989 and began private practice in Sherman Oaks, CA.  In addition to developing a thriving patient-centered practice, he served as a member of the Guidelines Committee for four years and as Laboratory Director for seven years.  During this time, Dr. Hersch was an active member of the medical staff of the Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, CA.  While at the hospital he served on the Intensive Care Unit Committee (Chairman for one year), Biomedical Ethics Committee, Professional Staff Newsletter Editorial Board, and the Cardiac Care Program Task Force.

Teaching

Dr. Hersch has always been interested in teaching others about medicine.  While in Los Angeles, he was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Southern California.  He enjoyed helping medical students learn how to take their theoretical knowledge and learn how to make it “user friendly” for their patients.

Hospitalist

In 2002 the partners in Dr. Hersch’s private practice were all contemplating significant changes in their practices.  Dr. Hersch’s choice was to move to Southern Oregon to accept a position as a Hospitalist.  Dr. Hersch saw this move as a chance to hone his critical care skills.  From 2002 to 2007, he worked at all 3 of the local hospitals—Providence Medford Medical Center, Rogue Valley Medical Center, and Ashland Community Hospital.

Meducation

As a Hospitalist, Dr. Hersch missed several aspects of his previous career—the teaching and the long term relationships with his private practice members.  For years he had been searching for some way to combine his two passions.  Meducation is his vision to allow him to do just that.  As a system of healthcare focused on teaching practice members about their health and about risk factor reduction, Meducation will foster patient centered healthcare and patient centered decision making.  Dr. Hersch will serve as a consultant to provide anticipatory guidance for improved health as well as serving as a traditional internist.

The success of this practice is due to Dr. Hersch’s extensive knowledge and his outstanding ability to explain medicine to patients.  Dr. Hersch works to stay current with the latest medical findings.  He has received both the California Medical Association Certification in Continuing Medical Education and the American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award multiple times.  Dr. Hersch is currently Editor-in-Chief for Inpatient Care Documents for ExitCare, a patient education company.  Because his favorite part of medicine is making the latest medical research and diagnostic information understandable to patients, he is willing to take the time necessary to teach practice members what they want to know.
